Benue Killings:Your Statement Are False, Osinbajo Tackles Gov Ortom

Read more: Benue Killings:Your Statement Are False, Osinbajo Tackles Gov OrtomThe Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), has expressed shock at a news report in which the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, said the VP was warned of the savage and inhumane killings by alleged herdsmen in Logo and Guma local government areas of the state, which took place on January 1, 2018.

However, Osinbajo said he does not believe Ortom was quoted rightly in the report.

In a statement by his spokesman, Laolu Akande, Osinbajo said it will be a terrible falsehood to suggest he was ever informed by the Governor or anyone else of the imminence of the killing of citizens of our country in those or any other local governments in Benue State.

Akande said in the statement: “Governor Ortom wrote to the Vice President, then Acting President, on 7th June 2017 protesting a newspaper publication where the leadership of Miyetti Allah was reported to have stated that it was opposed to the Open Grazing Prohibition law of the State and that they would mobilize to resist  the law. The Miyetti Allah had written to the Vice President on the 5th of June 2017 on the same law protesting several sections of the law. The Governor went on to say that the leadership of Miyetti Allah should be arrested because they used words such as ‘wicked, obnoxious and repressive,’ to describe the law, and because these were ‘utterances that are capable of undermining the peace….’“The Vice President subsequently met with the Governor, discussed the matter and the security situation in the State and then ordered law enforcement agencies to be on the alert to prevent any attacks or violence. This was in June 2017!

“In the said letter written by the Governor, there was no mention of any threat to any specific one of the 23 local governments of Benue State, so the best the law enforcement agencies could do even then was to await information or intelligence of an imminent attack. None came.  Since then the VP has held several meetings with the Benue State Governor, including a visit to the State on the 6th of September, last year at the behest of Mr. President during the tragic floods in the state last year. At all such meetings, the Vice President discussed the security situation of the State with the Governor.

“Following that, the then Acting President convened a major national security retreat which was attended by all State Governors, service chiefs and heads of security agencies. The Retreat featured very detailed discussions on the herdsmen/ farmers’ clashes.

“To the best of our knowledge, neither Governor Ortom nor the Federal Government was aware of the imminence of the cowardly attack on Logo and Guma on the 1st of January, and therefore any suggestion that the President or the Vice President ignored the State Governor’s warning is both absolutely false and certainly misleading.”

Read more: Ekiti 2018: Fayemi Result Will Be More Woeful This Time Around If APC Field Him.....FayoseThe Ekiti State Governor, Chief Ayodele Fayose, has said he and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, are ready for the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and the All Progressives Congress in the July 14 governorship election in the state.

Recall that Fayemi’s posters had flooded Ekiti State since Monday, with his loyalists urging him to join the gubernatorial race.

Speaking in Ado-Ekiti on Friday during an interactive session with heads of public primary and secondary schools in the state, Fayose in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, said Fayemi lost in 158 out of 177 wards and in all local governments the last time, adding that he would record a more woeful result this time around.

He said: “I thank you for your support and the feats recorded in the sector are because you are working hard and supporting our administration.

“You are the reason why we are doing well.

“You stood against the Philistines on June 21, 2014 and we defeated them in all the 16 local government areas.

“Let Fayemi come and contest and test his popularity.

“It is him we need.

“He is now advising Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State to sack teachers and saying that they must be tested and sacked.

“He is saying that the test is in the right direction.

“We have not changed the teachers and we have moved to number one in NECO, WAEC examinations.

“We won’t sack teachers in this state.

“You all know that you would have been sacked had Fayemi won the poll that brought me back.”

Fayose also disclosed his intention to empower 50 women per ward with N20,000 monthly and that he would incorporate 500 women teachers too.

However, among the women teachers, 650 would be those in primary schools, while 350 would be those in secondary schools.

The beneficiaries would have to go for data capturing, as the money would be paid into their accounts.

On the disparity in the salaries being owed workers at state and local government levels, Fayose said the six months the Federal Government gave Budget Support facility to the state government helped it to pay more salaries.

He also promised a more glamorous Women Day celebration this year.In his remarks, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers in Ekiti State, Olugbesan Olusegun, thanked the governor for the priority given workers welfare in the state.

Reacting to the release of 2019 election timetable, the governor said he has not withdrawn from the 2019 presidential race in spite of the fact that the PDP had zoned the ticket to the North.

Fayose said: “I am still in the presidential race.

“I am only waiting for the time Ekiti governorship election will hold so I can have the time.

“I am making contacts, I am reaching out to the people that matter across the country.”

Fayose said he decided to soft-pedal on his campaign because of the July 14, 2018 Ekiti governorship poll, adding that the campaign will begin to gain attention after the state election.

On the agitations of some PDP aggrieved aspirants that he should be prevented from interfering with the primary, the governor assured that the state has no role to play in the shadow election, saying it remains the prerogative of the Chief Uche Secondus-led National Working Committee.

Fayose said: “I have no role to play.

“Only the NWC will present the delegate lists for them to elect the candidate.

“So I won’t interfere despite my support for Prof. Kolapo Olusola.

“I have no regret supporting Olusola.

“If it were those people I had supported, they won’t be abusing me.

“But they remain our brothers and sister and we are going to put our house in order at the right time so that we can be on the same page.”

Addressing the teachers, Fayose appealed to them to support Olusola the way they did for him during June 21, 2014 governorship election where he defeated Fayemi.

He promised not to owe the teachers a dime at the expiration of his tenure on October 15, 2018, saying 1000 teachers will begin to benefit certain financial benefits from him commencing from the end of this month to give them a sense of belonging in his government.

He said: “Don’t vote for those that will come here and sack you. When they sacked your colleagues in Kaduna State, an APC leader in Ekiti said it was a right step in the right direction and I believe such person is not good for Ekiti teachers.

“Prof. Olusola is a man of integrity, very hardworking and dependable.

“He won’t betray you.

“He will protect your interests and I want you to support him.”

Kwara APC Slam Planned Recall Of Assembly Member

Read more: Kwara APC Slam Planned Recall Of Assembly MemberThe All Progressives Congress (APC)  in Kwara state yesterday described the recent move to recall a member of the state House of Assembly, Hassan Oyeleke as amateurish.

Alhaji Oyeleke is representing Eesa/Shaawo/Igodun constituency of Offa, at the state House of Assembly.

Some politicians from Offa,  Offa local government area of the state early this week threatened to initiate the recall of the legislator alleging poor representation.

Addressing reporters in Ilorin, the state capital Spokesperson of Kwara South APC,  Chief John Ogundiran said “we wish to state that we not only have  in Hassan Oyeleke but also want to submit that he is committed to scaling all heights, fathom all depths and traverse all horizons to ensure the people of his constituency enjoy the deserved dividends of democracy and he cannot and would not be distracted by the actions of a few misguided elements who considered it necessary to devalue an important provision of the constitution.

Chief Ogundiran added the the legislator “enjoys the confidence and the support of the traditional rulers, religious leaders, party leaders, the youths and the other stakeholders. “

Said he: “It is therefore irksome that some amateurish politicians have in recent times begun to set dangerous precedents by turning the constitution into a mere book of riddles and jokes, their actions and inactions is tantamount to doing violence to the sanctity of a very far-reaching and sensitive provision of the constitution by seeking to invoke it freely without any assignable reason, sadly they have sort of accorded the mentioned provision of the constitution a ‘beer parlour’ matter status.

“We deem it important to use this opportunity to call on the lovers of democracy across the nation to find a way of stopping the ugly trend aimed at subjecting the institution of democracy to ridicule. We are of the opinion that members of the public would help in no small measure in getting the dangerous developments discouraged by readily disregarding the ranting of such nature from those who having obviously woken up from the wrong side of the bed would simply resort to toying with the important provision of the constitution.

“We read with dismay, the purported recall process initiated by some politicians against the lawmaker, copies of the recall petition were also widely circulated in the social media by the proponents  in furtherance of the  execution of the mischievous plot to  subject the personality of the lawmaker to public ridicule.  In parenthesis, it is important to mention here that the recall process was  actually a case of the ‘the hands of Esau and the voice of Jacob’ we had it on good authority that  it was the brainchild of a veteran senatorial candidate who still bellyaches  for being made to record just 9000 votes in Offa and losing to the incumbent in the 2015 election, he has also found a willing ally in a National Assembly member who currently entertains fear of unknown over possible second term in the Federal lower house.”

He asked “is there any reasonability or tenable reasons for seeking the recall of Hassan Oyeleke?  Nothing could be farther from the truth; we submit with great respect that reasons for such does not in any way exist.    It is an indubitable fact that Hassan Oyeleke has emerged a shining light from the Offa axis, having under his sleeves the records of being the first indigene of the great city of Offa to hold the position of the Majority Leader of the Kwara state House of Assembly and his performance has not in any way fell short of expectations.

“He has indeed remained a source of pride to the great people of Offa.  The primary duty of a legislator is to make laws and get the interests of the constituents protected through the initiation of bills and motions.”
