54,388 Nigerians Infected With HIV In 3 Years Ssys NBS

The total number of HIV patients in Nigeria rose by 54,388 in three years.

The Social Statistics Report released recently by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed that the total number of HIV patients rose by 0.87 percent from 3.16 million patients in 2014 to 3.17 million in 2015.

The number of HIV patients increased by 0.85 percent from 3.17 million in 2015 to 3.2 million patients in 2016.

The report indicated that from 2014 to 2017, Nigeria recorded additional 54,388 patients living with HIV.

The report indicated that Akwa Ibom had the highest with 227,028 followed by Plateau with 212,600 while Ekiti recorded the least with 5,025 in 2016.

NBS indicated in the report that the main source of data for the report was the National Agency for the Control of AIDS/HIV (NACA).

Meanwhile, NBS also revealed that the total number of detected cases of tuberculosis in Nigeria was 91,354 in 2014 but decreased to 90,584 in 2015 and then increased to 100,433 in 2016.

However, for new smear-positive cases detected, there was a rise from 49,825 in 2014 to 57,277 in 2015.
