President Muhammadu Buhari late on Saturday said the 82 freed Chibok girls were released in exchange for some Boko Haram detainees.
So also did the President state that the negotiation for the release of the girls was done in collaboration with the security agencies, the military, the government of Switzerland, the Red Cross, local and international NGOs.
In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, Buhari said he was pleased that the negotiation bore fruit with the release of the additional Chibok girls.
The girls were taken by the Boko Haram insurgents from their school in Chibok, Borno State on April 14, 2014.
Buhari said in the statement by Shehu: “After months of patient negotiations, our security agencies have taken back these abducted girls in exchange for some Boko Haram suspects held by the authorities.”
Buhari is expected to receive the girls in Abuja on Sunday (today).
Available information has it that the girls had been transported by air late on Saturday to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, from Banki, also in Borno State, where they were released by their abductors.
