AMBODE SEEKS LEGISLATIVE SUPPORT AS 8TH ASSEMBLY BEGINS SITTING
Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, on Monday, sought the support of Lagos State House of Assembly in serving the people, saying the task ahead was enormous and would required collaborative effort to push through.
The governor made the call while inaugurating the state’s eighth legislative assembly, now to be presided over by Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who emerged speaker through a consensus arrangement that followed shortly after the inauguration yesterday.
Elected deputy speaker is Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sani representing Lagos Island Constituency I. Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, is stepping into the shoes of Adeyemi Ikuforiji, who served in that capacity for 10 years, making him the longest serving state House of Assembly speaker in the country.
Ambode in a short speech giving proclamation to the eighth legislative assembly said both the legislative and executive must work, not only to sustain the milestones attained by successive administrations in the state, but surpass past achievements.
The Lagos State House of Assembly is made up of 40 members drawn from the 20 local governments and 57 local council development areas (LCDAs) of the state.
“As we commence a new dispensation, it is important to note that we have a great task ahead. A great task, not only in the complexities of governance, but in sustaining the high standard that has been set by both the immediate past legislative and executive arms of government,” the governor said.
He pledged to cooperate with the lawmakers, assuring that he would not pursue issues that do not had the legislative backing of the House.
However, there might be times when both arms of government would disagree, and when such occurs, there would be need to quickly resolve the differences in the interest of Lagosians whom both the executive and the legislature have been elected to serve, he said.
