The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, is on the verge of sequentially emerging Nigeria’s Best Performing Governor, having polled 46.07 per cent of the total votes cast in the ongoing African Leadership Magazine’s Good Governance Poll 2017.
The poll commenced last week after the Magazine announced a list of eight nominees, selected based on their various performances on four core criteria: Security, Economy, Infrastructure and Accountability.
Ambode is trailed by Nyesom Wike, the Governor of Rivers State, with 22.47 per cent; while Willie Obiano, the Governor of Anambra State, has polled 12.36 per cent of the votes to maintain the third position, as at press time.
The magazine’s Good Governance Poll was initiated in 2016 with the aim of promoting good governance and engendering healthy competition between Nigerian governors towards delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Nigeria.
The 2016 inaugural winner was Ambode, who received the special award presented by His Excellency, Peter Mutharika, the President of the Republic of Malawi, at the Iconic St. Regis Hotel New York, US, on the margin of the 2016 United Nations General Assembly.
Going by the current results of poll, Ambode will be winning the Good Governance award in succession, a clear testimony of his continuous popularity and goodwill, as well as people-centered policies and strides in Lagos state.
In the fourth place, Aminu Tambuwal, Governor of Sokoto State, and Rochas Okorocha, Governor of Imo State, are at a tie, with 5.62 per cent of the total votes cast; Umar Ganduje, Governor of Kano State, with 3.37 per cent of the votes, sits in the fifth position; followed by Ben Ayade, Governor of Cross River State, and Kashim Shettima, Governor of Borno State, who are also at a tie with 2.24 per cent, as at press time.
The winner of the 2017 poll will be conferred with the African Leadership Excellence Award and decorated with the Best Performing Nigerian Governor Medal during the magazine’s international Summit on African Leadership billed to hold on September 21 at the margins of the United Nations 72nd General Assembly, New York 2017.
The first runner-up will also receive a commendation award in New York.
