The Kwara State government will commence the construction of Geri-Alimi Split Diamond Underpass in February.
Alhaji Aro Yahaya, the State Commissioner for Works and Transport, who made this known in a statement issued on Sunday, noted that this follows the handing over of the construction site to contractor in charge of the project.
The project, which was awarded to BAL Engineering Limited will cost N2.9billion, and is expected to be completed in 18 months.
Alhaji Yahaya, explained that talks have been held with owners of property that may be affected by the construction of the underpass, assuring that the owners will be compensated in accordance with relevant laws upon the presentation of appropriate documents. He, however, noted that they will be paid their compensation by the time the construction work begins.
The Commissioner also disclosed that his Ministry had worked out plans on when the road will be closed daily to allow for the construction work, adding that this will soon be made known to the public.
Additionally, Alhaji Yahaya stated that alternative routes such as the Egbejila-Asa Dam road will be completed and made available for public use before the construction of the underpass commences.
He said that officials of the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) will always be on ground to ensure smooth flow of traffic during the construction period.
The Commissioner disclosed that the construction of Geri-Alimi underpass is among the first set of projects to be funded under the Kwara Infrastructure Development Fund (IF-K), noting more capital projects will be funded through the scheme.
