The 17-year-old marriage of Emeka Ike officially come to an end in March 2017 after a Lagos Island Customary Court, dissolved his union with his wife Suzanne Emma following examination of a petition she filed before the court on the 13th of July 2015.

The three-man panel of judges was chaired by Chief Awo Awosola while others included Kehinde Jacob Olayinka and Opeyemi Olanrewaju, the only female on the list.

While addressing the court Emma, who approached the court to dissolve their marriage on grounds of incessant battery, said; “My husband treated me like nobody and throughout this divorce tussle; he had denied me access to my children. He does not allow them to pick my call as he keeps changing their numbers”.

“The last time I heard my first son’s voice was when he was sick and about to undergo surgery. It was a friend who informed me that my son was in the hospital and I called Emeka asking him for the location of the hospital but he refused to disclose that,” she added.

While delivering its judgement, the court president, Awos Awosola, said it was obvious from the evidence made available that the marriage is beyond redemption as both parties had made up their minds to separate.

“Emeka, who has been begging to be reconciled with his wife, has not made any effort towards the reconciliation. The marriage is hereby dissolved with effect from March 2, in accordance with the Lagos State Customary Court Law, 2011; Order 3 Rule 7 as amended,” the president ruled.

“Any party that is not satisfied with the judgment has the right to appeal to any court of higher jurisdiction within 30 days from today,” the court president ruled.

Mr. Awosola also informed that the court also received a photocopy of a bank draft of N300, dated July 20, 2016, which Suzanne used in refunding the bride price paid upon her for their marriage.

Emeka who was, however, awarded the custody of their four children but was ordered by the court that his ex-wife must have unhindered access to them, denied allegations of battery leveled against him by his wife but claimed that the “devil” entered their marriage when his wife paid the children’s school fees a certain time ago.
