Hamzat Performs Groundbreaking for 40-Bed Trauma Centre in Ikorodu, Hails Jimi Benson for Delivering Dividends of Democracy
In a significant boost to the healthcare system, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, flagged off the construction of a modern 40-bed Trauma Centre at Ikorodu General Hospital, facilitated by Rep. Babajimi Benson.
Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, encouraged Nigerians and Lagosians to focus on the country’s progress rather than dwell on negativity. Hamzat emphasized the significant advancements made in Lagos State’s infrastructure and healthcare.
“In 1999, only 7% of Lagos’ 9,189 roads were tarred. Today, that number has risen to 69%,” Hamzat noted. He also highlighted the increased capacity of healthcare facilities, citing a hospital that now sees 90,000 patients monthly, up from 2,000 previously.
Hamzat commended Rep. Babajimi Benson for his efforts in giving back dividends of Democracy to his people and emphasized the importance of preparation for emergencies, exemplified by the upcoming trauma center. He expressed gratitude for the support and encouraged continued pressure on contractors to ensure timely completion.
Rep. Babajimi Benson, member House of Representatives, Ikorodu federal constituency expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat for his presence.
Benson emphasized that the Deputy Governor’s presence at the flag-off ceremony underscores the project’s strategic importance. He noted that Dr. Hamzat’s involvement is unusual, as the Deputy Governor typically attends commissioning of events, not flag-offs, highlighting the project’s priority status.
He stressed that the 40-bed facility will decisively address Ikorodu’s growing healthcare needs, driven by the hospital’s remarkable growth from 2,000 to 4,500 patients daily.
Inspired by Adewunmi Ogunsanya’s renal centre, Benson facilitated the Trauma Centre project to bridge critical care gaps. Additionally, he highlighted other ongoing healthcare initiatives, including:
– An 80-bed Mother Care Centre in Imota LCDA
– A health centre at Agbele Ota-Ona
Agbele Ota-Ona
Benson urged contractors to deliver the project within the stipulated nine-month timeline, emphasizing that timely completion is crucial for the community’s well-being. He expressed confidence that with Dr. Hamzat’s backing, the community will receive top-notch healthcare services, transforming Ikorodu into a healthcare hub.
Dr. Taiwo Hassan, Chief Medical Director of Ikorodu General Hospital, celebrated the hospital’s remarkable growth since its inception in 1983. Originally a cottage hospital established in 1956, it now boasts 32 departments.
“We have experienced tremendous growth, from less than 2,000 patients monthly to 4,500 daily and over 90,000 monthly,” Dr. Hassan noted.
The hospital’s accident and emergency unit, donated by Henneken Foundation in 2015, currently has a 15-bed capacity. However, thanks to Honourable Jimi Benson’s fulfilled promise, a new 40-bedded trauma center is underway.
“Trauma accounts for 16,000 of our 23,000 patients annually. This center will significantly reduce mobility and mortality from trauma-related conditions,” Dr. Hassan emphasized.
