Lagos State House of Assembly’s Deputy Majority Leader of Lagos Hon. (Prince) Adedamola Richard Kasunmu has described the legislative arm of government as a tenacious institution whose roles and contributions to nation building cannot be overemphasized.

The super ranking legislator made the assertion during the 2024 Inter-Parliamentary Day celebration held in the chambers of Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday, 3rd July 2024.

The International Day of Parliamentarianism is celebrated annually every 30th of June to commemorate the date in 1889 on which the International Parliamentarian Union (IPU) was founded.

Speaking on the roles of the legislature in a democracy, the Deputy Majority Leader, who also doubles as the Lagos State House of Assembly’s Chairman, Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Relations, stated that, since the establishment of the Lagos State House of Assembly in 1979, the house has distinguished itself as an enduring institution totally committed to the welfare of the people of Lagos State, noting further, that Lagos has continued to thrive and flourish as a result of the commitment of the House of Assembly to sound legislative practices, that is above the common standards of excellence.

Drawing from his experiences as a state parliamentarian of almost ten (10) years standing, Hon. Kasunmu, said “the legislature is the very bedrock of democracy and it is very important to celebrate its progress every year.”
He also revealed that the privilege of being a legislator in the last one decade has offered him a unique opportunity of garnering deeper experiences of the parliamentary system, especially under the astute leadership of the Rt Hon. speaker, Dr Mudashiru Obasa.

The Deputy Majority Leader revealed that the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which was established in 1889, was saddled with the responsibilities of maintaining cooperation and seeking collaboration among parliaments across various countries of the world. He therefore urged legislatures to take the advantages and opportunities of working with the union in order to achieve better legislative outcomes.

Concluding his remarks, Hon. Kasunmu further laid emphasis on the fact that the Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Relations, which he Chairs, serves as an icon of good legislative system in lagos state.
He wished everyone a happy inter-parliamentary day.
