Issues Arising From The Threats Of Sen. Dino Melaye To Sen. Mrs Remi Tinubu, By Hon Tunde Braimoh
Wonders they say shall never end and a people clearly deserve the leadership it gets
As Nigerians, we must ask ourselves; How did we get here ?
What happened to our norms, our value systems , our etiquettes , our moral standards , ethos , pathos and yardsticks that characterized and distinguished us as a refined, reformed and renewed set of people distinct from the Stone Age men who lived when might was right and each person could take as much as he could grab. A period when life was shortish , brutish and nasty.
How did Government come about ?
It came about when people felt dissatisfied with the state of affairs described above and sought positive changes.
In light of the above; shall we the ask ourselves a crucial and critical question : Are we moving forward or backward as a people ?
Where is the forward movement when our behavioral pattern is still as obsolete , as anachronistic, crude , rude , raw and unrefined as it was in the Stone Age
How does a highest placed lawmaker ; a Senator of the Federal Republic conduct himself in such a way that a street urchin would claim better reservation in terms of appropriateness , decency and decorum ?
Let’s agree there is a disagreement within the Senate , does Melaye think he can score any good point by employing and exhibiting crass gangsterism and arrant impudence ?
Does he think it is a constructive position to threaten others ?
Worse still, what did he seek to achieve by attacking the sex and personalities of others ?
The issue also raise a no of legal and constitutional questions
First , the unwarranted and unprovoked , baseless, spurious and frivolous verbal assaults , insults and vituperation of Melaye on Senator Tinubu has infringed on the latter’s right to personal dignity and constitutional freedom from discrimination as a female.
Regarding females as sexual objects who could be raped or cowered to submission is a clear denigration , suppression and usurpation of their fundamental and constitutional rights and in the circumstances unfair, irresponsible , unacceptable inequitable , repugnant to natural justice and is therefore rejected.
Going forward , 56-year – old Distinguished Senator Tinubu is not his ur woman next door. She has came a long way to carve a niche for herself and therefore deserves the respect and reverence she commands
A happily married woman, a – soon -to -be – grandmother, former First Lady of the state of Lagos , holder of many traditional and other titles including the National honour OON, mother figure to many individuals and communities etc etcetra
She’s no doubt entitled to protection from harassment and molestation and should be entitled go redress.
Time will tell whether the Paliarmentary law of privilege will avail the loquacious , rable-rouser and ranting Melaye so as to subsume the constitutional entitlements of Senator Mrs Tinubu
In all , can we truly make progress when we don’t truly respect others especially those who are senior and more accomplished ? Senator Tinubu is a 56 year old matronly matriarch of her illustrious filial family.
