NIGERIAN BOXERS OUTSHINES WEST AFRICAN NEIGHBOURS AT GOtv BOXING NIGHT SHOW
The Nigerian duo of Olaide Fijabi a.k.a Fijaborn and Afonja Rasheed popularly known as Afonja Warrior were at their physical and spectacular best when they produced maverick displays to defeat West African rivals Djamiou Ekekpo of Republic of Benin and Adjei Sowah of Ghana respectively on technical knockouts at the Sixth Edition of GOtv Boxing Night Competition held inside the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos on Friday, March 25.
It was a night of entertaining pounds for pounds that kept spectators on feet all through the show, drumming support and blowing the vuvuzela for their favorite pugilists.
Olaide Fijabi stole the show proving too classy and technical for his Benenoise counterpart in their West African Light Welter Weight Title challenge. The explosive bout appeared to be the most entertaining fight of the night as both fighters dazzled the crowd with scintillating and tricky skills. Fijabi however defeat Djamiou by technical knockout in the first minute of the Sixth round of the fight, landing series of heavy punches on Djamiou which rendered him hapless. Fijabi’s display won him votes from Journalist at the event, to emerge the best and most entertaining boxer of the night. He was presented with the Modupe Ogunsanya Award trophy and N1million prize money.
Also, in the West African Middle Welter Weight Title challenge, Nigeria’s Afonja Rasheed wasted no time to announce his promises to Adjei Sowah of Ghana during their weigh-in exercise. Adjei kicked the canvass with two minutes of the first round after loosing balance from several fierce punches landed to his face by Afonja Warrior. The fight looks done and dusted but Adjei summoned strength to continue. However, Afonja finished the job in the third round by technical knockout, landing another fierce punches on Adjei and left hugh cuts on his face to win the title.
Earlier, before the West African regional fights, the first match of the night saw Prince Nwoye produced fine display to defeat Michael Rolland by technical knockout after five rounds in the National Light Weight Challenge. In the second bout, Samuel Elegbede lived up to expectations from his noisy fans to defeat Saidi Lawal on technical knockout in the first round of their National Super Welter Weight Challenge.
Subsequently, Mathew Obinna utilized his height advantage to defeat Yusuf Moshood in the National Super Middle Weight Challenge. The match referee stopped the fight after Yusuf committed several punch blunders down Mathew’s belt. Also, amazing and highly technical Otto Joseph proved too much for Hogan Jimoh JNR in the National Light Weight Challenge. Otto knocked out Hogan within two minutes of the first round. Hogan contested the result for several minutes before he was pacified by his father who was present at the venue to let go.
Not less than 50 GOtv decoders were won by spectators. Immediate past commissioner for youth and sports in Lagos, Enitan Oshodi, veteran artiste, Daddy Showkey, Actor, Ricardo Agbor amongst other dignitaries graced the eventful night
