Nigerian Lady Shortlisted For 2016 Young African Scientist Award

Glory Mbah, a 25-year-old Nigerian, has made the final list for the 2016 Young African Grain Legume Scientist Award along with other five participants.

This was contained in a statement signed by Martin Davies, the Information Officer for the award organising committee and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja.

The NAN gathered that the other five finalists are from Uganda, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Mozambique and Malawi.

It stated that Mbah was a first class graduate of the University of Lagos from the Department of Botany.

It added that her research focused on Biological Nitrogen Fixation with emphasis on the relationship between the legume-Rhizobium symbioses and macro/micro-nutrient accumulation in grain legumes.

It said her research intends to solve the problems of grain legume fertility decline particularly its nitrogen content faced by small-scale farmers across AfricaThe statement said the competition was organised to find the most innovative ways that beans and lentils can make a positive impact on our future.

It said the competition was an opportunity to hear exciting innovations from some of Africa’s brightest young scientists that would be judged by a panel of scientific experts.

It said the winner would be announced at the Pan-African Grain Legume and World Cow-pea Conference scheduled to hold at Livingstone in Zambia on March 3 as part of a grand gala dinner.

It also said that 2016 is the International Year of Pulses, adding that the research of these young scientists illustrates the important role beans and pulses can play in terms of combating climate change and some of the nutritional challenges facing the African continent.
