NUJ Denounces Press Corps. Award To Melaye, 14 Others
The Nigeria Union of Journalists has denounced the awards purportedly to be presented to Senator Dino Melaye on Tuesday by a self-styled group, the Senate Press Corps.
The position of the NUJ was contained in a statement by its President, Abdulwaheed Odusile.
The statement, signed the Senior Assistant National Secretary, Gbemiga Bamidele, said the NUJ did not approve such awards and does not recognize the Senate Press Corps. The statement reads: “The National President, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Abdulwaheed Odusile wishes to inform members of the public that the Union has not approved any award for Senator Dino Melaye and 14 others as is being paddled by some unauthorized members of the Union. The award purportedly by the Senate Press Corps of the Union is illegal as the body is not recognized by the NUJ constitution to give any award to anybody.
“The Union dissociates itself from the so-called conferment as it did not comply with the provision of the Constitution of NUJ on such issues, hence the nullification of the award.
“The National President has directed that we inform the public that anybody who deals with this group on behalf of any organ of the Union does so at his or her own risk please.”
