Ogun Moves to Boost Early Childhood Education

The Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), has put in place measures aimed at boosting Early Childhood Care Development and Education (ECCDE) programme, to enhance enrolment in public primary schools in the State.
Chairman of the Board, Alhaji Olatunde Okewole, stated this during an advocacy visit to his Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta office by the ECCDE advocacy team, made up of officials from the Federal Ministry of Education and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), to fast-track ECCDE policy in primary schools.
Okewole statwd that the state government is committed to basic education, by providing infrastructural and instructional materials to its schools, reiterating that the board would not hesitate implementing the programme as soon as the counterpart fund was released.
Earlier, the Board Secretary, SUBEB, Mr. Lekan Kuye, said over 85 percent of public primary schools in the state are ECCDE compliant, while 18 percent of the total enrolment of pupils are in the ECCDE level, adding that, concerted efforts would be made by the board to achieve the objectives of the programme, and to ensure global best practices at imparting knowledge through capacity building for teachers.
Leader of the team and Deputy Director, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Adebayo Awonusi, in his submission, appreciated the state government for its commitment to the policy.
Enumerating the objectives of the programme, the UBE representative, Mrs. Stella Ekweogwu, said public primary schools in both rural and urban areas were monitored, stating that the policy would boost enrolment, ensure a solid foundation for the cognitive, effective and psycho-motor development of the child.
He urged government and community leaders to ensure that children have access and are exposed to the programme.
Presenting SUBEB reports, the representative of the Department of Academic and School Services, (SUBEB), Mr. Sina Ogundinu, revealed that the State government has complied with the compulsory pre-primary education with the provision of both infrastructural and instructional materials for the smooth running of the programme.
