Ryan Giggs beats Craig Bellamy to land the Wales job

Ryan Giggs has been appointed Wales manager and the Manchester United legend is due to be unveiled in his first permanent managerial job on Monday.

Giggs had a spell as interim manager at Manchester United in 2014 following the departure of David Moyes and then worked as assistant to Louis van Gaal. He has since been looking to begin his managerial career and will succeed Chris Coleman in leading what has been called the ‘golden generation’ of Welsh football, headed by Gareth Bale.

The 44-year-old Giggs made 64 appearances for Wales as a player between 1991 and 2007. 

The recruitment process was apparently finely balanced and another former Wales player Craig Bellamy also impressed during interviews. As well as Bellamy and Giggs, Mark Bowen and the current technical director Osian Roberts were also interviewed for the job.

Wales narrowly missed out on qualification for the World Cup this summer under Coleman but he turned down the offer of a new deal and instead returned to club management with Sunderland
